If processes are to be synchronized in large, distributed systems, this can be done via the network, e.g., based on IEEE1588 (Precision Time Protocol), or via a physical toggling signal (seconds pulse or DCF77). TwinCATÂ 3 EtherCAT External Sync extends the TwinCAT EtherCAT master with an option to synchronize the Beckhoff real-time with external digital signals. The digital signals are read via timestamp-based terminals, such as the EL1252 EtherCAT Terminal.
